republican senator chuck hagel. there he is. you can see him in the little circle on the left there. with john mccain's entourage as john mccain was getting ready to launch his presidential bid back in 2000. this is the same chuck hagel who is president obama's nominee for defense secretary now and who john mccain spent the day today vilifying and attacking as manifestly unqualified for that job. back in the day john mccain not only was kind of best buddies with chuck hagel, but he specifically said that he thought chuck hagel would make an awesome defense secretary someday. >> as far as secretary of defense is concerned, there's a lot of people that could do that. one of them i think is senator chuck hagel. >> john mccain and chuck hagel were so close that in 2000, when john mccain realized that he was not going to get the presidential nomination, when john mccain decided he had to give up that bitterly fought nomination battle, the person his campaign put out to speak to the press the day he made his decision to withdraw was his dear friend, old chuck. >> two aides tell nbc news t

probably one of the very first second-determine nominations that president obama announced. chuck hagel ended up not being in brussels today. he has not become the new defense secretary yet because republicans in the senate have filibustered his nomination. a cabinet nomination has never, ever in the history of the united states been filibustered before. but these republicans in this congress and our time decided that they would do this unprecedented thing to chuck hagel. one of the major items on next week's news calendar is that the republicans are expected to finally relent and allow chuck hagel to be confirmed. but jane mayer published something at the new yorker today that made headlines everywhere today because she turned up the way republicans have been operating in washington at the time they have been trying to stop him. to be clear, even with the unprecedented filibuster, everybody knows that chuck hagel is going to be confirmed as defense secretary. democrats have a majority in the senate. hagel has the support of every single democrat in the senate and he has the support of some r

chuck hagel nomination seemed like it was done. enough republicans had said they would support mr. hagel's nomination. enough republicans had agreed that they should not filibuster him. but he looked ready to be confirmed by the senate. but now it is not clear when that vote might happen, even though if the -- even though the outcome of that vote is a foregone conclusion. the senate armed services committee has now put off its vote on mr. hagel. and that's because 23 senate republicans are demanding that chuck hagel provide specific financial information about private corporations where he has served on the board. not information about the money he made but information about the corporations themselves. the senators are also demanding that chuck hagel give them copies of every speech he has made in the past five years, including notes you utilized for preparation or in giving the remarks, to which former senator hagel has responded, "your request for financial information regarding certain private corporate and non-profit entities is not mine to give. as i board member i have a fi

participating in filibustering chuck hagel's nomination to be secretary of defense. he says chuck hagel is too darn disagreeable. so says john mccain. quote, in a heated dispute over immigration law overhaul, mccain screamed f you at john cornyn who had been raising concerns about the legislation. this is chicken -- stuff, mccain snapped at cornyn. are you calling me stupid chuck grassley once said? no, replied senator mccain. i'm calling you an -- jerk. at a gop meeting last fall, mccain erupted out of the blue at the respected budget chairman pete domenici, quote, only an -- would put together a budget like this. a speech about all his years in the senate through all the heated debates no one had ever called him that. another man might have taken a moment to check his temper, but mccain went on, i wouldn't call you that unless you really were that. >> you can disagree, but if you're disagreeable, then people don't forget that. >> ah, the arbiter of disagreeable. it is rich to hear that as the supposed criticism of chuck hagel coming from john mccain. but honestly, it's not just john mcca

nominee for defense secretary chuck hagel, he does have majority support in the senate. what happened today is that a minority of that body, the republicans, decided that they were going to block him anyway. never happened before. they filibustered a cabinet nomination. in the past, over the years there have been a couple of token efforts at maybe doing this in the past that got a handful of votes. didn't actually slow down or stop anything. but the minority actually blocking the nomination, that is a whole new thing. this is a fresh hell in american politics. and that is why before today, even republican senators said it would be nuts to do this. before today these senators, these republicans for example all said yeah, listen. i might be opposed to chuck hagel for defense. i might vote no on his nomination, but i'm not going to blow up 220-something years of precedent and filibuster the guy. i'm not going to block there being a vote on him. we've never done that before. republican senators john mccain, roy blunt, roger wicker, susan collins, lisa mer cow ski, all of these said before

hearing was another national security pick, the former senator chuck hagel. his confirmation hearings for defense secretary were not a breeze. the vote on his nomination has not yet happened. republicans in the senate are now hinting that they might even filibuster chuck hagel's nomination for defense, which of course sounds normal, because, you know, it seems like republicans filibuster anything now. but in fact that would not be normal that would be unprecedented if they do it. the reason republicans are even considering doing this unprecedented thing is because they cannot block chuck hagel's nomination by normal means. even though the republicans have persuaded lots of the senators on their own side to oppose his nomination, they are a minority. and they have not persuaded any democrats to oppose him at all, at least none that have come out so far and said they'll vote no. now, there was that strange effort which seems to have been a right-wing effort to make it look like there was a democratic and left-wing opposition to chuck hagel. but honestly, it was ridiculous. and we had to pul

leap, if they filibuster chuck hagel, they will not succeed. we know it because of math. there are 55 senators in the democracy caucus, they support chuck hagel, you need 60 to override a filibuster, so if you carry the one, the democrats only need one on their side to support a filibuster, there are two on record supporting chuck hagel for defense secretary, and we've seen reports for another six republican senators who have said that even though they may, oppose hagel, they wouldn't support a filibuster, there are two that seem unlikely to filibuster as well. that means a total of ten republican senators who wouldn't support the filibuster, and if i have done the math right that is double the amount they need to override it. it is still more than enough, even if you subtract the squishy two. the vote is not expected until thursday, the full senate vote not expected until after that, but honestly, barring something unforeseen, we'll have a new defense secretary and it will be chuck hagel because of math. >>> the white house is pushing ahead with an ambitious domestic policy agenda

distinction that republicans in the senate are using right now to try to stop chuck hagel from being confirmed as our nation's next defense secretary. no cabinet nominee has ever been filibustered in the history of our country. it takes a majority vote to confirm someone the president wants in his cabinet. no one has ever tried to filibuster that before. it has never happened. even though a bunch of republican senators do not want chuck hagel to be defense secretary, they have insisted they would never filibuster him, because of course that would be unprecedented. you don't filibuster cabinet nominees. john mccain said that. lindsey graham said that. they doan like him, but they would not filibuster him. now they are filibustering him any way. those two senators and james inhofe from oklahoma say they will force a 60-vote super majority threshold for confirming chuck hagel for the first time in america for any cabinet nominee. and that is a filibuster. but they are insisting that nobody call it a filibuster, because, of course, they said they wouldn't do that. they are filibustering

, chuck hagel. whether or not they filibuster him that. >> don't have the votes, although at least one republican senator is threatening to try a filibuster anyway. senator lindsey graham of south carolina is also now threatening to put a hold on the hagel nomination, even though there is no precedent for that ever. no cabinet nomination has ever been filibustered or held by a senator. while lindsey graham is making the decision as to whether or not he wants to be famous forever for doing something nobody else has ever done in the history of the senate in order to block chuck hagel, the current defense secretary leon panetta is on his way out. they gave mr. panetta his sendoff on saturday, though it looks like he'll probably be in charge for another week or so. his time has been a period of lasting change for the u.s. military. after the end of the iraq war, he has overseen the beginning of the end of america's longest war ever in afghanistan. the clinton era policy of "don't ask, don't tell" ended under leon panetta's watch, at his recommendation that the nation allow openly gay p
